The Diploma of Retail Management (DRM) course adopted from the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Diploma of Retail Leadership (SIR50116) is designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the dynamic and fast-paced world of retail. With a focus on practical skills and real-world experience, students will gain a deep understanding of retail best practices and the ability to apply them in a variety of settings. This course covers a range of essential topics, such as driving profits through strategic planning, managing change, handling difficult customers, integrated marketing, as well as managing inventory and stock.


The course is suitable for individuals who manage a retail business, multiple retail stores or departments, following a business strategy to deliver profitable results for the organisation. These individuals support senior management and provide leadership to retail teams. They plan and evaluate the work of themselves and others, operating with autonomy and responsibility for personal outputs. Upon completion of the Diploma of Retail Management, graduates will be well-equipped to pursue a range of retail management positions, from entry-level to senior roles, in a variety of retail environments.


What is the industry need and market demand?


The scope of the Retail Management course is comprehensive and encompasses various aspects of managing and equipping the students to understand the retail environment. Diploma graduates in retail management would be able to think strategically and drive profits, manage chances, handle difficult customers, managing stock and inventory, and to some extent, online business in addition to brick and mortar. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Analyse the operating environment. Develop the strategy plan. Implement, monitor and evaluate the strategic plan.

  • Evaluate and plan retail financials. Monitor and control financials. Positively impact the financials.

  • Plan for change. Implement and embed the charge. evaluate outcomes of change.

  • Deliver the vision. Demonstrate leadership. Act on difficult issues.

  • Identify communication requirements. Negotiate to achieve an agreed outcome.

  • Participate in and lead meetings. Make presentations.

  • Identify potentially disruptive customers. Implement actions to defuse and de-escalate potential conflict.

  • Manage disrecpectful, aggressive or abusive customers. Document and report incidents.

  • Analyse the internal environment. Analyse the external environment. Develop marketing strategy and plan. Implement a marketing plan. Review marketing plan.

  • Determine social media requirements. Develop social media policies and procedures.

  • Develop a social media strategy. Monitor social media use. Review social media performance.

  • Coordinate visual merchandise requirements. Supervise visual merchandise activities. review the impact of visual merchandise activities.

  • Monitor stock receipt and dispatch. Maintain stock records. Process and follow up orders. Minimise stock losses. Coordinate stocktake or the cyclical count.

  • Apply theoretical knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program in a real-world retail environment.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, and teamwork during the internship experience.

These learning outcomes, aligned with the specific units of the SIR50116 - Diploma of Retail Leadership, aim to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and practical experience to excel in various aspects of retail management in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework.


What are the course details and entry requirements?


I. Modules Covered:

• Retail Strategy

• Managing Change

• Communication with Retail Customers

• Integrated Marketing in Retail Sector

• Stock Control and Visual Merchandising

• Industrial Attachment


II. Academic Requirements:

• Obtained at least D for any GCE O Level subject, or

• Higher National ITE Certificate (Higher Nitec), or

• 10 years of formal education OR equivalent, or

• Matured students with 30 years and above with at least 8 years of work experience will be considered


III. English Proficiency:

• IELTS 5.0, or

• AAC EFL Level 4 or equivalent.


(Students without formal English qualification will be given a placement test to determine the level of proficiency.)


IV. Age Requirements:

• Applicants must be of age 16 and above.


V. Course Duration:

• 6 Months + 6 Months Industrial Attachment

• Full-time students: 15 hours per week
